Unpack within 24 hours and record the unboxing. Keep the plant in bright shade for 3–5 days before moving it into full sun.

Bare-root plants go into a dry, gritty mix. Wait 3–5 days before the first watering so any broken roots can heal.

Light: full sun or very bright light. Variegated forms burn first, so give them 30–40% shade in May and June.

Water: water deeply, then wait until the mix is completely dry. In pots this is about once a week in summer and much less in winter.

Monsoon: humid air and rain rot the crown. Keep potted agaves out of the rain and stop watering for most of July and August. Soft-leaf Mangave are most at risk, because their centre leaves can stick together.

Mix: mostly pumice, lava rock or coarse grit, with a little bark. Garden soil on its own holds too much water.

Winter: most agaves cope with Punjab winters outside. Cover small and variegated plants on frosty nights in December and January.

Sap: Euphorbia have a white sap that irritates skin and eyes. Wear gloves if a stem breaks, and wash your hands after handling.

Light: bright light to full sun. Round species such as Euphorbia obesa like a little afternoon shade in May and June.

Water: water when the mix is completely dry in the warm months, and very little in winter.

Monsoon: round species rot easily. Keep them out of the rain and stop watering during humid spells.

Winter: keep them dry and under cover on cold nights.

Light: full sun. Pachypodium love heat.

Water: water when the mix dries out from March to October. In winter they drop leaves and rest, so water very little until new leaves appear.

Cold: bring them under cover when nights fall below about 10°C.

Mix: gritty and fast-draining. Keep them out of steady monsoon rain.

Growth: most grow in the warm months and rest in winter, often without leaves.

Water: water while the plant is in leaf and the mix is dry. Cut back hard once the leaves fall.

Monsoon: keep the caudex dry. Rot usually starts at the base, so use a very gritty mix and keep the caudex above the soil line.

Tree aloes: plants such as Aloe pillansii and Aloe dichotoma come from very dry country. Water them sparingly and keep them completely out of monsoon rain.

Light: bright light or sun. Young plants like some afternoon shade in peak summer.

Light: full sun. Move a new plant into strong sun over a week or two to avoid sunburn. Blue forms such as Pilosocereus keep their best colour in bright light.

Water: water deeply when the mix is dry in the warm months. Keep almost dry in winter.

Pot: tall plants need a heavy pot so wind does not tip them over, and a gritty mix that never holds standing water.
